SUMMARY: Youth Care Workers in the Street Reach Shelter operated by MYS report to their immediate Healing Home Supervisor and are responsible for implementing all aspects of the day-to-day functioning of the program. YCWs are expected to provide ongoing, culturally sensitive care while adhering to organizational policies and procedures. A major focus of their work is to provide support for high-risk children and youth who are at risk of becoming victims of sexual-exploitation, or who have already become victims. YCWs are responsible for engaging youth in welcoming and non-judgmental ways. YCWs are expected to be a positive role-models at-all-times and to intervene purposefully into the young people’s daily life events in a manner which will help the young person recognize risks for being sexually exploited. Youth care workers work from a needs-based, trauma informed, relational child and youth care approach as per the agency expectations and standards.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES; 
• Be aware of the whereabouts of all youth accessing the shelter at-all-times as per program dictates and policies 
• Interact with young people in a manner designed to help them feel safe and accepted as well as develop, manage, facilitate, and direct all daily program activities 
• To provide shelter, crisis intervention, client case decisions and planning as well as basic needs service provision to at-risk youth, in an emergency shelter setting, from a Strength-based clinical philosophy.  Also Working together with other teams in the best interest of client’s and the overall mission and purpose of the program.
• Record keeping and report writing as required, ensuring that all receipts for items purchased on program funds are collected and forwarded to the Healing Home Supervisor 
• Observes, evaluate, and records daily life events according to the program recording procedures.  
• Work as part of the team to ensure consistency in the youth’s experiences and intervention plans while accessing services and support from the SR Shelter Program
• Directly engage and develop relationships with high-risk youth who are receiving support through their brief and/or continued involvement with the Street Reach Programs (Community Outreach and Shelter);
• Meet with youth individually and in a group to discuss issues related to their life and experiences, reflecting on the reasons for their involvement with the SR Shelter Program and how they might access other community-based resources that will reduce their risk for being sexually exploited
• Intervene into daily life experiences to help the young person recognize risks for being exploited and to encourage alternative choices that could reduce such potentials
• Encourage and assist individual youth in developing their strengths and interests in lessons in sports, music, dance, or other endeavors. Inform youth of community-based opportunities and assist with making connections when/where interests are shared
• Encourage and participate in applicable cultural programming with youth (while involved with SR Shelter Program and via informing/encouraging about the availability of community-based resources) and relevant community activities
• Planning for meals and grocery shopping, engaging youth in the process encourages youth to participate in cooking and baking while accessing support from the SR Shelter Program
• Assist with maintenance and cleanliness of physical property, building, yard and maintenance program vehicles and appliances  
• Ensure regular inspections of the facility with a focus on fire extinguishers, fire escapes, smoke alarms, and locks and any other Occupational Health and Safety related compliance issues and report any safety and health concerns to the Healing Homes Supervisor 
• Identify and report predators/people sexually exploiting children/youth, as well as identify locations where children/youth are being sexually exploited

QUALIFICATIONS;
• Degree or Diploma in social services, Diploma/Certificate in Child & Youth Care, or other relevant discipline with a minimum of three to four years of experience in front line work, including outreach services, other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
• Must have an understanding of the Child and Family Services Act as well as knowledge of provisions in CFS Act and Criminal Code of Canada in relation to Prostitution, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse offenses.
• Knowledge of child sexual exploitation, addiction issues, and other relevant health, justice and social issues faced by Indigenous children/youth.
• Knowledge of community agencies/programs that are considered specialized to work with exploited high risk children/youth in the community.
• Proven, excellent written communication and documentation skills to maintain reports and client files along with documentation that may be required by law enforcement and child welfare agencies. An excellent ability to develop working relationships with law enforcement, child welfare agencies and other key stakeholders
• Awareness of the high risk communities/areas or places that children/youth are being  exploited and or placed at risk 
• Must have excellent physical and emotional health. 
• Must have valid driver’s license (Provide Drive in Force Documentation) 
• Must have Emergency First Aid and Non Violent Crisis Intervention training.
• Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, a clear Child Abuse Registry check with acceptable Prior Contact checks and a clear Adult Abuse Registry check, all done within the last 3 months;

SALARY RANGE:  $37,440 - $46,080 annually, depending on qualifications per annum. MYS offers a competitive benefit package. 

HOURS OF WORK: This position is required to work a variety of shifts, including days, evenings, overnights and weekends.
