Casual Youth Care Worker- Independent Living with Support Program

SUMMARY: Macdonald Youth Services requires an experienced Youth Care Worker within the Independent Living with Supports (ILS) Program. To provide a program within the policies and treatment philosophy of MYS and Transition Services.  The successful candidate will be required to work independently as part of a multi-disciplinary team in providing a nurturing, caring and safe environment for male and female youth in their own apartments and in the community.  As a team member duties may include, but are not limited to, teaching life skills, administrative responsibilities, crisis management, maintaining health standards as directed by residential licensing, and contributing to treatment programming.  Sound judgment, stress management, and good role modeling skills are required.

Youth Care Workers are responsible to provide care and specialized treatment for the youth in accordance with agency policies and the treatment philosophy of MYS. Youth Care Workers are also responsible to carry out all duties and responsibilities within a youth-centered, relationship-based strengths framework that promotes the cultivation and mobilization of youth strengths, potentials and capacity for growth within the Therapeutic Model of care.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:  of the Youth Care Worker include, but are not limited to:
• Acts as a healthy role model and ensures that the needs of the youth are the primary focus in the treatment process;
• Maintains an awareness of the needs of the youth and structures specific programming that attends to the physical and emotional needs of youth;
• Provides an opportunity for the youth to observe and participate in a variety of community activities, with the youth care worker engaged in the activity as well;
• Performs house maintenance duties including but not limited to; washing floors, cleaning bathrooms, kitchen, shovelling snow, mowing lawn and laundry;
• Assists the Clinician/Therapist in identifying treatment needs of youth;
• Assists the treatment team in formulating and evaluating treatment objectives involving family members and significant others whenever possible;
• Participates in the development of Treatment Plan objectives and identifies opportunities for treatment objectives to be achieved within the community school and family;
• Completes incident reports as outlined by Licensing Standards;
• Reports inappropriate behaviours to the Program Manager and/or Coordinator;
• Ensures a holistic approach is consistently applied regarding the youth’s needs;
• Distributes medications as outlined by Licensing Standards;
• Compiles all documentation of youth activities, doctor, dental, therapy as required;
• Works to build a working relationship with youth;
• Prepares reports as required and/or assigned;
• Provides feedback to the Program Manager regarding youth’s progress;
• Actively pursues the educational requirements for YCW’s, as directed by MYS Policy.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Certificate or diploma in Child & Youth Care (other combination of education and experience may be considered);
• Two years’ working with at-risk youth;
• Knowledge of trauma and resilience informed care;
• Strong counseling skills and experience in behavior management;
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
• Emergency First Aid and CPR Level C;
• Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, a clear Child Abuse Registry check with acceptable Prior Contact checks and a clear Adult Abuse Registry Check, all done within the last 3 months;
• Ability to work independently with youth in their apartments and the community;
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a team of professionals (Therapists, Program Manager and Team Leader) with the ability to teach Life Skills and recognize safety risks;
• ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) or comparable training; NVCI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Skills Training) or willingness to obtain;
• Willingness to use public transportation;
• Previous knowledge and experience of FASD;
• Knowledge and experience with groups and group dynamics with a desire to work with youth;
• Computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office products;
• Working knowledge of community resources and experience in community partnerships;
• Knowledge of Indigenous cultures and languages would be an asset.

SALARY RANGE: Depending on qualifications, per annum.

HOURS OF WORK:  Variety of shifts including days, evenings, weekends and holidays
