POSITION: UNCLE – LAND BASED EDUCATION AND COUNSELLING
SUMMARY: As a member of the Indigenous Initiatives team the Uncle, is available to MYS residents and staff with a focus on Foster Homes and programs. The Uncle provides individual and group programs, conducts appropriate in-house ceremony and other cultural activities. Uncle integrates Indigenous cultural care, into the life of the organization through regular involvement with Healing Homes, foster homes and MYS programs, works collaboratively, completes and revises Cultural Plans of Care for individuals in MYS and functions within an open minded, strengths based, trauma informed, relational child and youth care approach. The Uncle also supports and maintains MYS cultural practices and ceremonies to ensure they are Traditional Knowledge Keeper led, are gender non-binary to promote inclusion, expression and focus on the gifts and strengths each child or youth bring. MYS Indigenous Initiatives practices a policy of open-mindedness and inclusion regarding culture and ceremony for children and youth and their care providers.
This position requires a clear criminal record check, child abuse registry check and vulnerable sector check. This position also requires regular evening, weekend or overnight work and occasional travel.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: of the Uncle include, but are not limited to:
- Works closely and in consultation with the Indigenous Initiatives Family
- Develops and cares for Healing Home and program bundles, storage and processes for replenishing supplies.
- Works with children and youth to complete and/or revise Cultural Plans of Care and interacts with young people in a manner designed to help them achieve their goals.
- Provides opportunities to learn how to scout, track and prepare and harvest animals for feasts and ceremonial use.
- Participate in meetings as required and promote positive teamwork and exhibit a high degree of positive role modelling for young people
- Guides the delivery of rites of passage opportunities in consultation with the Indigenous Initiatives Family.
- Provides detailed reports on cultural activities, record keeping and report writing as required, including monthly summaries of activities and progress in Cultural Plans of Care.
- Makes necessary arrangements for the gathering of medicines or other out of Winnipeg excursions needed for the organization or in fulfillment of a Cultural Plan of Care that connects resident to their home community.
- Educates staff and residents in protocols of ceremonies and traditions as well as the use of significant objects, medicines and bundle items, while following MYS policy for open mindedness and inclusion.
- Develops welcoming and discharge protocols for young people in MYS care.
- Develops and implements Rites of Passage programming for MYS youth and families.
- Conducts seasonal and other ceremonies, coordinates the work required in preparation of ceremonies at MYS.
- Participate in the assignment of any other job-related tasks as requested by their Supervisor.

To successfully perform this job, the individual must be able to perform each key responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. • Must have demonstrated understanding of Indigenous culture and traditions.
• A satisfactory combination of experience and education focusing on children and youth in care
• At least two years’ experience working families and children and youth at risk of being in care, in care or aging out of care
• Demonstrated cultural and ceremonial knowledge competence with ability to participate in agency training for development
• Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous peoples within a child welfare environment.
• Ability to handle confidentiality and sensitive situations with caregivers in a multi-disciplinary team environment
• Must be able to demonstrate strong teamwork and communication skills.
• Experience providing supportive counseling and/or delivering human service programs is critical.
• Ability to present a satisfactory child and adult abuse registry check, satisfactory Criminal Record Check (vulnerable sector search) and a satisfactory Driver’s abstract and Driver’s license.
• Hold valid First Aid CPR Certificate
• Ability to attend work regularly as scheduled and flexibility to attend evening or weekend programs or ceremonies and overnight travel on occasion
• Ability to recognize and honour the importance of all world views and beliefs and include a diverse range of spiritual and religious practices by Indigenous peoples
• Ceremonies and activities, construct bundle items and rites of passage items for program use
• Knowledge of wilderness survival skills and ability to teach and mentor others
• Empathetic communication and engagement skills, and knowledge of Indigenous child and youth development
• Certification in Daily Life Events and Therapeutic Crises Solutions training is a definite asset.
• A safe and reliable vehicle with proof of appropriate insurance (at least $2 Million, third party liability)
SALARY RANGE: Depending on qualifications, per annum. MYS offers a competitive benefit package and pension plan.
HOURS OF WORK: Must be available to work a variety of shifts including, days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
