A warm welcome: My first week at MYS

By Kerri Irvin-Ross

The date of April 3, 2018, will be forever imprinted in my mind as the day I started what feels like my dream job. Over the years, I have had the privilege of advocating and facilitating social change through various avenues with the goal of creating opportunities for everyone. As a part of the MYS team I will continue working towards that goal and I know I will be inspired daily by this wonderful new challenge.

I was anxious about how the news of my appointment would be received, but all my fears quickly evaporated as the feedback was positive and encouraging.

On my first day, I was welcomed in the parking lot as our Manager of Agency Admin Support, Erica Ament, opened the back door and graciously ushered me to the second floor while explaining the colour-coding system of each floor, with orange accents on the first floor, green on the second, and blue on the third. I was then introduced to many team members, shook many hands and heard many acronyms.

After a very busy morning of meeting and greeting I snuck over to the Youth Resource Centre, where I was delighted to find diet coke, baked goodies, comfy chairs and thankfully another warm welcome.

What really stood out for me was the kind, reassuring, and warm welcome I received and the feeling that I had come home.

The remainder of the week flew by as I attended team meetings, scheduled more meetings, met more team members and learned more acronyms. I observed firsthand the commitment team members demonstrate daily to support youth and families across Manitoba. I was in awe of the compassion and caring I heard as numerous stories were shared about the experiences of team members at MYS.

I have a lot to learn about this amazing organization, which has served Manitoba youth for nearly nine decades. I am confident the dedicated MYS team will assist me as we prepare for the future.

In the upcoming weeks, I look forward to meeting more team members, introducing myself to our community partners, learning new acronyms and discovering the heartbeat of MYS. I am so proud to be part of this incredible team.
