ARCH - Workforce Venture Program

Rationale
MYS placement programs access day programming provided by the public school system. While this has been successful for some youth, many youth require alternative programming that is not readily accessible or available through the public school system. With this in mind, the WorkForce Venture Program (WFV) was developed. The main objective of WFV was to provide academic and practical learning opportunities for youth that are struggling with maintaining a full academic program within the public school system. WFV was not intended as a replacement for these educational services, but rather a much needed additional support for them.
Target Group
  • ARCH youth who are struggling to maintain a full academic program within public school.
  • ARCH youth with a history of academic and behavioral difficulties within the public school system and for whom a program is not available to meet their individual need.
  • ARCH youth who are a risk of dropping out of school.
In order to work with the school system and encourage clients to remain involved in that system, the WFV Program offers part-time programming for all participants. Time can range from a minimum of one half day a week to a maximum of five half days a week.
Work Experience Component
The work experience component of WFV operates like a small business generating enough revenue to cover the program equipment and supplies; pay youth wages, and operate program vehicles.

One or two youth at a time work in the community with one adult. Jobs completed in the community include maintenance, garbage removal, snow clearing, yard clean ups, moving and other jobs as required. The number of half-days available for a youth to work depends on his or her needs, the amount of work available in the community, and the number of ARCH youth who are 14 years of age or older.

From September to June, the WFV Program works closely with the school where the youth is registered and with the ARCH home where the youth lives to ensure the youth’s needs are being met appropriately.

In July and August, the WFV Program operates on the basis of part time summer employment.
Academic & Life Skills Component
This component of the WFV Program is available to those students who reside in a school division where there has been a collaborative agreement negotiated between that division and MYS. In those cases, registration for this program takes place through the public school. Intake is accomplished through meetings with the school administration, the student and an ARCH Program representative. It is through these meetings that the student develops his/her academic goals and plans are established to help the student achieve these goals.

The primary customers of the WFV Program are the clients of the Adolescent Resources in Community Homes Service. Where space is available, other MYS clients will be accepted on a fee for services basis.
