MYS Remembers Tilly Simpkin
February 19, 2009

“A year ago we lost more than just a co-worker; we lost a friend, a member of our MYS family.  Even though time has passed and time has healed, Tilly was a classic lady that will never be forgotten.” – Christine Sohan

On February 22, 2008, tragedy struck when Tilly Simpkin, beloved member of the MYS family, passed away due to an unfortunate accident.

“It is with unbelievable sadness that I need to inform you all of the fact that Tilly Simpkin, Admin Support to Client and Clinical Services, has suddenly passed away accidentally on her way to work this morning.  Tilly brought incredible energy and enthusiasm to her work at Macdonald Youth Services. She was a true “people person” who always greeted everyone with cheerfulness and a positive attitude. She had become a part of the MYS family and built strong and meaningful relationships. She will be truly missed.”

With those words, the news of Tilly Simpkin’s passing was spread throughout the MYS community. Immediately following the announcement of the news, MYS established a memorial page for friends and loved ones to share memories about Tilly. In recognition of the anniversary of Tilly’s passing, MYS would like to share a small sample of some of the things written:

“Tilly possessed such a vibrant and engaging personality”

“You never missed an opportunity to reach out a helping hand”

“I lost a bright flower – a perennial – from my garden today”

“Tilly left her prints on the lives of many”

“Thanks for teaching me that we must always take the time for each other in this busy world”

The memorial page provided many with a place to share their grief and provided Tilly’s family with a place to read more about their loved one:

“Hi, I’m Kate (Simpkin) Chapman, Tilly’s sister.  Thank you, all of you, who have posted these wonderful memories and tributes on this website. I and all my family have loved reading them.  Thank you to Macdonald Youth Services for creating this Memorial Page. Tilly was unique and had (has) so many wonderful friends. Thank you for the love and friendship you showed her. Thank you for the gift of your presence at her funeral. Thank you for the support you are giving Michael. Although the way that she was taken from us is a shock, remember that it is not how we die that is important, but how we live. May God bless you all, and I wish you joy, love and peace.”

Tilly’s passing garnered national attention and was featured in an article in Maclean’s magazine in March 2008. To read the article, click on the additional document at the bottom of this page.

Although time has passed, Tilly’s memory is still strong here at MYS:

“As we continue to work on projects that were important to Tilly, we are reminded of her laughter, formidable intellect and unconditional caring for others – and we continue to miss the bright flower from our garden.” – Erma Chapman, Executive Director, Macdonald Youth Services

Rest in Peace Tilly
